The Notion of Happiness: The Responsibility You Have to Yourself

The Notion of Happiness: The Responsibility You Have to Yourself

In your heart, in your life, how many times have you thought about how happy you’ve been? The times may have been tough. You can sit there on your porch thinking about the what ifs and what buts. Yet, things have been done. And they cannot be undone.

But you, you are not a source of joy only for others; you have to be a source of joy for yourself as well. You already know how to talk to yourself. You just need to know how to communicate with your inner self too.

How honest have you been with yourself in your life? You cannot make others’ happiness your own. You need to learn to live in the moment. Feel your heart beating. Understand how alive you are. And live it. Happiness isn’t always earned; it’s sometimes felt as well.

Give Yourself the Happiness You Deserve!

Talk to yourself silently. You cannot make your suffering overcome you. You cannot make your happiness be decided by someone else’s actions. No.

Instead, think about the morals your parents taught you. Like the lessons on living on your own. Like the lessons where you must pick up your things when they fall. Or like the lessons where you have to get up even if you fell and learn to not fall again.

Life is like that. Whether it’s cycling which you learned by falling down time and again or swimming, life has challenges. But they shouldn’t stop you from realizing your dreams. Or just make someone else’s dream your own.

The Story of the Man Who Hired a Ferry

Once, there was a man who wanted to cross the river. He hired a ferry. The ferryman took him to the wrong location. He got angry and took another ferry. Yet, he didn’t reach the destination he wanted. Crying hoarse, he hired another ferryman but he took him to the wrong place too.

He just couldn’t go to the destination where he wanted. He got frustrated. Why would someone be so stupid to do this? There was rage inside him. There was anger as to why it was happening to him.

The rage that was there though dissolved when he realized that he could achieve nothing by being angry. Instead, it would make it harder for him to communicate with the ferryman, and tell him where he went. If he had remained calm and explained the directions to the ferryman, he could have done better.

Life has problems. Being perturbed isn’t going to get you a solution. Acting on it and trying to do what you can, will. You have but one life. You owe it to yourself to be happy. Give happiness a chance.

Be happy to be alive. Do things that you always wanted to do. Take things off your bucket list. Find your dream. It’s time to chase it!
