Foster Genuine Curiosity and Respect

Creating a truly welcoming and inclusive environment for every single client is absolutely fundamental to how I approach coaching. It means building a space where individuals feel genuinely safe, seen, and heard, no matter their background, identity, or journey. For me, it starts with an active and intentional stance of curiosity and respect. I don't assume I know someone's story or perspective; instead, I open myself up to learning from them and understanding their unique lens on the world. This means listening not just to their words, but to the nuances, the unspoken context, and their lived experiences.

One concrete strategy I always employ is to actively check my own biases and assumptions, before and during every interaction. We all carry them, and acknowledging that is the first step. What's more, I encourage clients to bring their whole selves to our sessions, assuring them that our space is one of complete confidentiality and non-judgment. I find that when I model openness and a genuine desire to understand, it naturally invites clients to feel comfortable sharing their authentic selves, fostering a truly diverse and inclusive dynamic within our coaching partnership.

Attune to Each Client's Unique Background

One powerful strategy I use to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all clients, regardless of their background or identity, is to go through personal attunement - attuning to each client's unique and personal background and experience. I recognize and acknowledge that I shouldn't assume I know who they are based on previous experiences with others. I invite my clients to co-create their experience with me, and I maintain an openness to fully understand their identity, their value systems, their do's and don'ts, including boundaries and ways of working that help them feel safe, seen, heard, and respected.

See Individuals as One-of-a-Kind

I begin by making eye contact and seeing each individual as the only one of "them" on the planet. I provide some general information at the beginning of the session to offer structure and create space for questions or comments. I read their body language and try to mirror it slightly to increase the likelihood of connection. I ask open-ended questions and follow their energy to determine which subsequent questions may need to be asked.

If they appear to have trust issues, I may share a bit of personal experience so they don't feel so alone. Their story is very interesting to me, and I give them my full attention and respect as they are being courageous in sharing it. However their story unfolds, I meet them where they are, ask them where they want to go, and then partner with them to help them get there.

Listen Carefully and Remove Access Obstacles

Developing a welcoming and inclusive space starts with careful listening. Clients need to feel secure in disclosing their experiences and identity without fear of judgment. It demands a continuous commitment to meeting clients where they are, increasing trust, engagement, and progress.
